The gut–brain connection—and the pressures modern life can place on the ecosystem inside us.

Last week, we mentioned that your gut talks to your brain. This week, let’s look at how—because once you understand the conversation, a lot of familiar sensations start to make sense.

Scientists call this network the gut–brain axis. It is a fast-growing area of research connecting the digestive tract and central nervous system through nerves, hormones, immune signals and compounds produced by gut microbes.

Meet the “second brain”

Your intestines contain their own complex network of neurons: the enteric nervous system. It can coordinate much of digestion independently, which is why it is often nicknamed the “second brain”. It does not think like the brain in your head, but it is in constant communication with it.

Most vagus-nerve traffic travels upwardMany fibres in the vagus nerve carry sensory information from the body toward the brain. This shows how much information the brain receives from the gut—but it does not mean the gut has “ten times more influence” over thoughts or behaviour.

Ever had butterflies before a big meeting, felt nauseous from stress or lost your appetite when anxious? That is the gut–brain axis in real time. These symptoms are not imaginary: stress can alter gut movement and sensitivity, while signals from the digestive system can influence how the brain responds.

The pressures of modern life

Diet, medication, environment and stress all help shape the gut microbiome. Some changes are temporary; others vary greatly from person to person. Researchers use the term dysbiosis for an altered microbial community associated with disease, although there is no single universal definition of a “healthy” microbiome.

AntibioticsCan reduce susceptible bacteria as they treat infection, sometimes changing the microbiome.
Ultra-processed dietsMay be low in the varied fibres many beneficial microbes use.
Chronic stressCan affect digestion, gut permeability and microbial composition.
Environmental exposuresAre under study, with effects depending on the chemical, dose and duration.

Digestive disruption may occur alongside brain fog, poor sleep, skin symptoms or low mood, but these concerns have many possible causes. An association does not prove that the microbiome caused a symptom—or that changing it alone will resolve the problem.

A note on autism statistics: historical Soviet-era figures and today’s diagnosis rates are not directly comparable. Definitions, awareness, screening and access to diagnosis have changed substantially. Research is exploring relationships between the microbiome and autism, but there is no evidence that gut dysbiosis alone explains the rise in recorded prevalence, and autism is not something a probiotic has been shown to prevent or cure.

A system that responds

This is not a reason to be frightened. It is a reason to stay curious. The gut ecosystem can respond to changes in diet, medication, sleep and stress—although responses are individual, and scientists are still learning what lasting change looks like.
